Erik Dirksen

Erik Dirksen’s career has been mostly centred on the faculty of Economics of UvA with the lifelong interest is in the interface between International Economics, Politics and Business, topics which he has been teaching for over 30 years.
He has also been a Soviet economy specialist, lecturing and researching the Soviet planning system, between 1976 and 1992. With the demise of the Soviet Union the field transformed into Transition Economics, where he led research on the transition of Socialism into Capitalism.
Besides, since 1988 onwards he has been a visiting lecturer at the Clingendael Institute of International relations, lecturing on topics straddling the interface between International Economics, Politics and Business, what is nowadays called geoeconomics. In 1995 he transferred from the micro-economics Department to the International Strategy one, where he also started giving lectures in Business Strategy. Between 2004 and 2017 he was involved as chair as well as a lecturer with NGO SPARK at a number of summer courses and seminars in Kosovo and other post conflict areas. Finally, he has also been a professor of European Studies since 2012.
